not acceptable to be worn by students during the winter. If it is a gym day, they are welcome to change into shorts before gym class.

-If you are missing a coat, sweatshirt, etc., there is a good chance it is in our lost and found. Lost and found items are located in the elementary office.

Mrs. Shoup Retires Shoup
Marlena Shoup, our kindergarten teacher here at Mary A. Goetz Elementary, is retiring from teaching at the end of December.  Mrs. Shoup has taught many grades throughout her 32 years at Mary A. Goetz Elementary.  She began her career teaching fifth and sixth grade, but has spent the majority of her time as a kindergarten teacher.  During her career, she taught part-time while raising her two children, but returned as a full time teacher once her children were older.
Ludlow Elementary has been fortunate to have Mrs. Shoup as a kindergarten teacher for many years.  Our students left kindergarten well prepared for first grade expectations after having her as their kindergarten teacher.  She will begin her retirement by taking a well deserved trip to Hawaii with her husband who is also retiring.  She looks forward to not only travelling but spending more time with her granddaughter.  Our students and staff wish Mrs. Shoup a fond farewell as she begins a new phase of her life.  She will be missed by all!

Elementary Awarded $500 Grant for Pottery Pottery
On December 7th, Mary A. Goetz Elementary was awarded a $500 art grant through the LilySarahGrace Fund.  This organization funds art education throughout the United States for school-age children.  Mrs. Miller wrote the grant to buy       supplies for students in grades 5th and 6th to create their own pottery.  Students will be creating pottery from clay, then glazing it with the color of their choice before it is fired in a kiln.  This is a great   opportunity for our students to experience the arts and have a permanent piece of their own work, without cost to the student or the school.  On behalf of the students at Mary A. Goetz Elementary, we would like to thank the LilySarahGrace Fund for supporting our students.

Please Pay Your School Fees School Fees
Each year, parents are asked to pay students fees for each of their students. These fees go towards purchasing instructional materials and supplies in the classroom, along with helping to support the extra-curricular programs here at Ludlow Elementary. Without these fees, budgets become tight and we are forced to conserve the materials that we can purchase.   We are asking parents to please pay their student fees as soon as they can. Fees for the elementary are $40 per students for the school year. If you are unable to pay the full amount, we are more than willing to work with you making payments. You can pay your school fees any day by seeing Mrs. Trammel in the office, or sending money in an envelope with your student marked “school fees”. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Mr. Steffen here at school.

State Testing Begins May 14th Testing

Beginning on Monday, May 14th, all students in grades 3rd-6th will be assessed with the new state accountability testing. Testing will be comprehensive in the areas of reading, math, science, social studies, and writing. Also, this year, students are required to complete the testing in 5 days, as opposed to the 10 days in previous years. It is extremely important that our students arrive at school during this week on-time. Please be aware that students will be testing all day on these days, so please avoid making doctors appointment or events that will cause your child to miss school that week. State testing will show the academic progress of our students and determine the how our school compares to other schools in the state. This is important as we plan for the future needs of our school and a sense of pride. So it is extremely important that our students perform at their best. If you know that your student is going to miss a day that week and it is unavoidable, please let us know in advance of the testing week.

Ludlow Implements Positive Behavior Intervention Behavior

Beginning this school year, we will begin a      positive behavior system in the elementary school and the high school.  This will be a system of teaching appropriate expectations for behavior to the students by using a common language.  You may hear your child referring to voice level 0, 1, 2, or 3.  These are the appropriate voice levels in areas of the school.  For example, in the hallways, students should be at a voice level 0.  This means that there is zero talking in the hallway.  Voice level 1 is appropriate for the cafeteria where only 1 person should be able to hear you.  A voice level 1 is a whisper.

Along with voice levels, students will be taught appropriate expectation for behavior in the     hallways, cafeteria, and the restrooms.

We encourage our parents to reinforce these  behaviors to our students while they are at home in hopes to achieve this expected appropriate behaviors.  If you have any questions, please feel free to call the office to discuss.

KPREP and End-of-Course Testing will take place throughout the month of May.  Our district was named a Proficient District last year due to our scores, so we are confident our panthers are ready to go "beyond" that!  Check out the calendar on this webpage to see what specific tests take place each day.  How can parents help?  Help your child get a full night of rest before a day of testing, and see that they eat a healthy breakfast each morning.  We know our panthers' scores will be out of this world: To Proficiency... And Beyond!      (Note: This picture of Buzz Lightyear was a collaborative mosaic project completed in 2012.  Mr. Keller's high school art students worked with our elementary students to create each piece of this mural.)

What are you doing this weekend?  The LHS Drama Program has been working hard for the past few months to present Acting Can Be Murder.  Catch one of the shows:  Saturday at 7PM or Sunday at 2PM.  You’ll be seeing two shows in one:  All is going well for Beverly Gladstone and her cast, who are in rehearsals for Which Butler Did It?  Things take an abrupt turn when leading lady Guinevere Black suddenly departs for Europe, leaving understudy Delores Gordon to step into her role.  However, as you’ll see in the opening minutes of the play, things are not as they seem.  We hope you enjoy seeing Beverly try to get ready for opening night while dealing with off-stage drama, sub-par acting talent, and a whole lot of secrets!

Support our casts and crew!  Tickets are $5 at the door.

Safety Change in Morning Drop-Off

Beginning Monday, February 1st, we are asking that all students who get dropped off on Oak Street in the morning are dropped off on the SCHOOL SIDE of the street.  The curb lane in front of the elementary school will now become a drop-off only zone.  There will be no parking (or double-parking).  We are asking for students to exit from the curb side of the vehicle, thus keeping them out of traffic.  We ask that students are not dropped off in cars on the opposite side of the street (heading toward Adela Avenue).

Staff will be on duty outside to work with parents on the new procedures.  We appreciate your help with making our campus a safe place for our students.

4th Graders Hold Science Fair

Way to go, 4th Grade!  This  year's 4th graders brought back the excitement of a Science Fair.  They wanted to show everyone what amazing scientists they are!  It had been since 1992 since this grade held a Science Fair.  The students created experiments from testing insulation, making magnets, to finding out what will melt ice faster.  The 4th graders worked really hard for about 3 months to complete their experiment, science journal and their posters to give a presentation.  They presented to their classmates, to the whole elementary, and then to their families at the March 27th Family Science Night.  It was a great success and we look forward to see what experiments come out of next year's 4th Graders.

Do you want to change a child’s life and make a meaningful contribution to our school? One to One

Become a volunteer Reading Coach!

One to One: Practicing Reading with Students invite Mary A. Goetz Elementary parents, grandparents, caregivers and community volunteers to play an integral role in helping struggling young readers with the support they need to be successful in reading.  Each volunteer “reading coach” will commit to meet with a 1st-3rd grade student just 35 minutes per week during the 2013-14 academic year.  Coaches provide children with the time, attention, and the opportunity to practice reading which will make a difference in their lives.  One to One requires new coaches to complete six hours of training in September 2013 and complete a background check.

To obtain additional information on One to One, please visit the Northern Kentucky Education Council’s website at www.nkyec.org.  If you’d like to be contacted when specific training dates and locations are confirmed, please contact Nancy Costello at the Council, ncostello@nkyec.org or (859)282-9214.

Please Pay Your School Fees!!

Trammel in the office, or sending money in an envelope with your student marked "school fees". If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Mr. Steffen here at school.

2013-2014 School Fees

Outstanding Teachers Recognized

Congratulations to Tammy Roberts and Vickie Baker!  These two outstanding teachers were nominated to receive a Golden Apple Award this year at the March 27th Excellence in

Education Dinner.  They were recognized as one of the area's Top 20 Teachers.  Both teachers are known for their dedication to the children of Ludlow, always going above and beyond the call of duty.  We certainly appreciate everything they do for students, families, and the Ludlow community.

Pay on Cafeteria Accounts Online

Parents/Guardians can now make payments online for a student's cafeteria account.  Ludlow offers a free breakfast, lunch, and after-school power snack to all students, but they can choose to purchase additional a la carte items, snacks, and drinks.  Parents can add funds to these accounts online through the new Infinite Campus system (replacing MyFoodBucks).

To Use:

1.  Parents can log into the Infinite Campus portal (this is the same site to check grades/attendance).

2.  Click on the "Payments" tab and follow the directions to add a payment method.  Then add the amount to be placed.  You can add your email address to have a receipt emailed if you prefer.

3.  Click on the "Food Service" tab to see account balances and to view a detail of all cafeteria transactions for each student.

4.  If parents use the mobile app too, they check account balances and even set alerts for low balances.

If parents need assistance with setting up an account to log into Infinite Campus, please contact Jenny McMillen at 859-261-8210 or jennifer.mcmillen@ludlow.kyschools.us.
